Thread Count means the number of threads woven together in a square inch. You count both lengthwise (warp) and widthwise (weft) threads. So 200 lengthwise threads woven with 200 widthwise threads produce a Thread Count of 400. Its not double the Thread Count, double the thickness though as a finer, higher quality thread is used to achieve a higher thread count making a smoother cloth.
Beware of cheap alternatives which are Two Ply, this is when two fibres are twisted together and for example where a 400 thread count is really a 200 thread count. Two Ply or Twisted are no where near as smooth or as long lasting as our Single Plys. John Lewis and other large UK department stores have just been investigated and now have to state if there thread counts are twisted.
Jersey and Flannelette bedding don't have a thread count, they have a GSM (Grams Per Square Metre). The higher the gsm the heavier the cloth.
